News that Staffordshire County Council is seeking to install no waiting restrictions on a road junction in Gnosall has this week gained support from the Councillor for the Village. Councillor Barry Stamp said he was pleased that both the County Council and Staffordshire Police had recognised that cars parked on the junction of Lowfield Lane and the A518 near to St. Lawrence School were causing a danger. "Although Lowfield Lane is a very narrow road, it does
form the only route to and from St Lawrence school. Before and
after school it is extremely busy with both cars and pedestrians.
Parking in the area is limited, with parents being forced to
park on the lane if the school or adjoining village hall car
park is full. Some parents even park right on the junction of
Lowfield Lane and the A518. This practice not only endangers
other drivers, but also cuts down the visibility for children
who are crossing the main road at this point. While I realise
that by imposing no waiting restrictions at this junction parents
will have even more difficulty in parking, I do think the safety
of the children must come first. I am pleased the County Council
and the Police are supporting these restrictions, but they will
only be effective if the police monitor them and if necessary
prosecute any drivers who park illegally. With this in mind,
I will be writing to the Chief Constable asking that once the
restrictions are in place the police do ensure they are observed,"
said Cllr Stamp. "I am hopeful that the statutory consultation period
is only a formality and that these no waiting restrictions will
be installed as soon as possible," added Cllr Stamp. |
