Plastic Recycling Service is Rubbish
28th September 2003

Stafford Borough Council's recycling initiatives have come under fire this week from a leading Councillor.

Church Eaton Ward Councillor Barry Stamp, said he was amazed that despite all the investment and publicity surrounding the Council's work in the field of recycling plastic bottles could not be deposited at any recycling sites across the Borough.

"The Council are proud of the way they are collecting recyclable materials either from residents doorsteps or from recycling centres located throughout the area. However I am amazed that plastic bottles can only be accepted if left for doorstep collection. It has to be remembered that there are around 3000 households that still do not get this service and therefore have to rely on recycling centres. The Council tells me that they are unable to get anyone interested in taking old plastic from the recycling centres, but this seems illogical when it is collected on the doorstep! I believe it is important that a full recycling facility is offered right across the Borough. The lack of interested contractors is not an excuse especially as a number of other Councils in Staffordshire do provide this service," said Cllr Stamp

"I now intend to raise this matter with the Environmental Health Scrutiny Committee and will be asking them to look at the recycling service currently being offered to local residents," added Cllr Stamp.
